Quote:I understand what you're saying and I agree. But, when it comes to other sources they have to have the product.
APMEX has all of the sets I listed in stock right now.
JM Bullion had one year in stock and it was just a few dollars less than
APMEX. I couldn't find any at
SD Bullion and Mount Vernon Coin only had one year in stock.
Fair enough, but why just limit yourself to the PMDs? Look, I'm no
ebay fanatic but it really is the market for this level of collecting, or at least a very good gauge of it. Have you tried there?
ebay HAS the product right now. Yes, you have to be a discriminating, careful buyer but, well, doesn't that apply to everything these days?

But yes look at the coins, not just the price tag. Zoom the heck out of the pictures and see what they look like and hope they look like that in person.
Yes, that absolutely makes sense for you to do from wherever you purchase your coins. Are you telling me that you're getting choice, pristine coins/sets from the 3rd party PM dealers? The same sets that anyone can cherry pick from and swap coins in and out of after they ship from the mint? Yes, you get what you pay for, but at the end of the day, anything not direct from the mint is secondary market and is subject to many hands doing many things with them, so buyer beware. I'm not sure paying
PMD markups for OGP sets is the best way to go.
Aside from my personal, cynical opinion expressed above, it is possible that they (the PMDs) DO take the time to collect and curate the best sets. I haven't ever bought anything from PM dealers other than bullion for stacking (and, for the record, my purchases have ALWAYS been lovely; I use JMB personally). Maybe it is worth the markup to do so. I will say that I've bought plenty of OGP sets from
ebay and I've had mostly winners. A couple clunkers too.
At the end of the day, buy from whomever you like. I'm just saying you can find a great set for much cheaper at market prices if you shop around.
ebay, go to a coin show, or your local coin shop and negotiate.
Sorry to go on a tirade; it was a long day at work. @GLB49, I think your collection is outstanding and I encourage you to keep collecting and collect the way YOU want to. Curmudgeonly folks like me are just offering you options and thoughts from personal experience. YMMV.
Looking forward to your next
ASE.

Cheers!
