May of 1955 saw a new TV quiz show on ABC: "Penny to a Million." Contestants answered questions to build up a jackpot which started at one cent and could rise to a maximum of $10,000 (one million cents). I suppose it could be considered a precursor to "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"

Here are images from the introduction:

The show was pretty boring and only lasted into October.

Very interesting!

I have been catching up with Krapopolis on Hulu. "Buy Low, Sell Ty" (Episode S1.E12) features the invention of coin... well, borrowing the idea from an Athenian. Their is a cartoon depiction of a coin with the Owl of Athena. Silly show, but funny.

The show was hosted by Bill Goodwin. Goodwin was for many years the announcer and a recurring character on the Burns and Allen radio program, and subsequently The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show on television from 1950-1951. He's also the father of jazz drummer F. Bill Goodwin. Bill played with saxophonist Phil Woods for forty years.

Caligula
Starring Malcolm McDowell, Helen Miram & Peter O'Toole
***NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART*** but still a great movie.
The gold coin shown here is a movie prop..
I've also included photo of an actual Roman Coin from the reign of:
Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus aka: Caligula; Reign: 37-41 AD
He was renowned as a very savage person to say the least and was eventually Assassinated.

There was a TV series on British TV in 1998 called "In The Red". In one episode a bank manager was shot with a bullet made from a pound coin, and the introductory titles were shown against the backfround of a spinning 1998 £1 coin - a date that was only issued in Specimen and Proof sets!

Great thread!

There's a scene from The Brady Bunch, the one with the trip to the Grand Canyon, where Mike gives a couple of the kids some money to run up the road to a store. The coins he gave them were unmistakably silver. They rang out a clear as a bell when he dropped them into the kid's hand. I think it was Peter, Bobby and cousin Oliver.
