In the 1966 episode of the Batman TV show entitled "The Joker Goes to School," the Clown Prince of Crime hatches his latest fiendish plot at Gotham City's Woodrow Roosevelt High School. When a cheerleader puts a dime in the milk vending machine, instead of receiving milk she gets a handful of silver dollars. Other students report vending machines that produce stock certificates and the answers to the nation-wide standardized tests. The Joker's idea is that if the kids are given valuables instead of having to work for them, they will turn to a life of crime and join him in his evil escapades.

In the cheerleader's hand I see a Morgan reverse, two Peace obverses and one Peace reverse. I also noted that the girl on the right is Linda Harrison, who, two years later, starred as Nova in the original Planet of the Apes movie.

Cowboys and Aliens (sort of a sci-fi western I guess) features a very brief glimpse of a pile of double eagles, which are an important part of the plot involving the Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig characters. I have no idea why they are all 1866.

I watch a lot of classic hollywood movies, and occasionally you get a close-up of change thrown on the counter to settle a bar tab, etc. I always try to stop it and see what the coins are.

The 1966 "My Three Sons" episode titled "The State vs. Chip Douglas" is on TV right now on MeTV+.

The rare coin mentioned was the 1914-D penny that Ernie says is worth $37.50. He adds that in 20 years it'll be worth a fortune. In 2020, CoinTrackers says its worth a minimum of $281 while one in perfect condition can be worth $5,500 or more. ($37.50 would be equivalent to $295 in 2020 after adjusting for inflation.)

The Batman Joker program has some other numismatic tidbits:

One of the Joker's henchmen is named "Two Bits" and the other is "Nick" (for nickel?).

The Joker also mentions "bad pennies".

In the 1972 Brady Bunch episode "Cindy Brady, Lady," Bobby's friend Tommy says: "A real Kennedy half-dollar!" when Bobby shows him his coin. Bobby also says: "I gave Tommy Jamison my Kennedy half-dollar."

You can also get a Brady Bunch colorized JFK half dollar U.S. 2-Coin Set here: https://www.ecoins.com/entertainmen...oin-set.html (The Brady Bunch-featured coins are Genuine U.S. Legal Tender Coins and Authentic U.S. JFK Kennedy half dollars).

I see Maine Member already mentioned the "My Three Sons" episode about the 1914-D penny.

I just read the following since I was already watching the 1980s TV show Newhart on Catchy Comedy tonight:

"The part of Larry was actually written with veteran character actor Tracey Walter in mind, but Walter was asked to audition for the role and in the end Sanderson (who had worked with Walter in Coal Miner's Daughter) managed to steal the part away from him. Sanderson partially attributed his success to the lucky coin he'd worn in his ear at the audition (and which he continued to wear while in character), because he'd done the same when he had auditioned for Coal Miner's Daughter."

Larry always wore a quarter in his ear.

Last night (4/19/2024) on Jeopardy, one of the categories was "Not Your Everyday Words." A contestant named Scott Nations chose this category for $2000. He got a Video Daily Double.

Ken Jennings then read the clue: "Below the line on ancient coins, the exergue is the space with the alliteratively named 'this' mark. Here, for the city of Siscia."

Scott answered, "What is 'mint' mark?" That was the right answer and it catapulted Scott into first place. (Unfortunately Scott wound up in third by the end.)
