Seems to me the beans have been spilled. The left coin is a 1964 and the right coin is a 1965.

I'd say the left coin--it looks slightly more white than the right.

If both of these are 196X Kennedy half dollars, each contains silver.

The question is not which one contains silver, it's which one is 90% silver (as opposed to 40%).

Interesting the OP did not show us a side-by-side pic of the reverses of the coins. Me thinks It might be because there is a small "D" mintmark on one of them!

All things considered, this whole thread has been a discombobulated mess since it was originally created with screwed-up mislabeled pictures on day one. Since then it's been in a free fall.

The 90% cladding on the right hand coin appears suffer from lamination on the edge, (most obvious on the edge under the date), and so must have a 1965 to 1970 (inclusive) date, and thus also is a 40% silver coin.

I am much more used to observing this sort of edge lamination or chipping on ancient coins with a silver covering and a much more base (billon)** core.

** billon is a less than 50% silver / base metal (usually copper), alloy.

That is one thing I have noticed in the past. It is much harder to see the 80 Cu - 20 Ag core on many of the 1965 halves. Later dates it is much more noticeable.

As to why, I do not know. If one were to find a 1965 half that weighs 12.5g, very likely it is a transitional error coin. Aka a 1965 struck on a 1964 planchet.

The quarter transitional errors are obviously more noticeable. I am a caretaker of one.

I say left cause it's a 1964 and the silver content was lowered in 1965.

OP edited just about every one of his posts, and swapped images around. This entire thread has been a disaster.
