This coin, I think, is up there in the list of most beautiful coins ever minted. Unfortunately it is prohibitively expensive and I can't afford one (well, not without selling the children anyway )

However I did manage to pick up this Somalia 25 Shillings for only Ģ1 which really does make a good substitute

YEs - the toning is stunning on that one. The Somali crown is only Cu-Ni but the obverse is pretty similar and does look quite well in hand

Now can anyone actually explain the chemical process of that to me? (Yeah ok, I'm a nerd and that sort of thing interests me!)

I think to wrong material was used to clean this coin and thatīs why this toning but I can be wrong.
