The British Government introduced a new series of circulating coins for Cyprus in 1901 - this is the four-and-a-half piastres:

As Queen Victoria passed away in 1901, this was destined to be a single-year design.

The piastre was tied to the pound sterling at a rate of 180 to 1, is that right?

Yes - 9 piastres were equal to one shilling, and 20 shillings to a pound.

I have found the 1/2 piastre coins from time to time but never anything like this.
Only 400,000 of these were minted - lower than the 1909-S VDB Wheat cent but available at a fraction of the price if you can find one.

In August 1947, India gained it's independence, so for 1948 coins, "ET IND: IMP:", or Emperor of India, had to be removed. However, The Royal Mint in England was responsible for preparing new obverse designs, they were not ready until late in 1948, and demand for new coins meant that Canada couldn't wait. So Canada minted 1947-dated coins and added a maple leaf after the date to indicate that they were actually minted in 1948, creating this one-year anomaly.

As a result of all this, the 1948 Canadian dollar is famous, having a mintage of only 18,780. Yet it's forgotten step-brother, the 1947 ML $1, was also minted in 1948 with a mintage only slightly higher at 21,135 and only one-third as valuable.

Curiously, Great Britain and Australia didn't seem to care - they still minted 1948 coins with IND: IMP:.
