Hello All, I am looking to add to my type set album and was going to buy this 1875 S Seated Liberty half dollar but the mint mark location and size looks wrong from what I have seen on PCGS and other images on the Internet. It looks like it should be higher near the branch and more to the left, above the "F". The one online looks low and sits in between the "F" and the "D". I couldn't find any other examples that looked like this so is it maybe a fake?
The first two pics are the coin in question (obverse and reverse). The last one is what PCGS coin looks like.
There are 15 identified mintmark placements for the 1875 S Half Dollar. This coin is a WB-103, WB-1 with a rarity of R4. You can find all the different die marriages at http://lsccweb.org/BillBugertBooks.php.
Yowza, that is the most helpful reply ever!!! Thank you so much. I love that you provided me a new reference link to pour over. Learning about these obsolete coins is one of my favorite pastimes, so thank you so much :)
Quote: Placement aside, those two MMs don't look the same size.
According to the reference linked above, page 13, there were 4 mint mark styles for 1875-S, this one being the medium-small S. Page 185 shows the die markers.
