Went to a local coin shop just to see if they had any New Orleans Morgans. So he pulls out 15 or 20 which I look over with a magnifier. Here are the 4 I picked.

I'd appreciate any input on grading and whether price was about right. Regarding the former, these 4 fill in some of the holes in my N.O. collection but are not the grade I ultimately want. So it was a trade off for me. Will still look for higher grades, though.

1881-$40 (This one looks a little shiny to me. Cleaned?)
1883-$35
1887-$35
1891-$35

The 1881-O is definitely cleaned - return this if you can.

What's up with the eye lid on the 1881-O? Otherwise agree with Coinfrog.

Yeah, I see lots of scratches, all going at the same angle. Also, I noticed that the 2nd image in NOT the '81 reverse. I got images mixed up. The '81 reverse has same scratches and shine. I'll see if I can exchange it.

The 1881-O is harshly cleaned as noted. Looks live the reverse image shown is the same as the 1891-O.

Slight reverse rim damage on the 1883-O. The 83, 87, and 91 are decent circulated coins in the F-VF range.

pass on the 81 harshly cleaned

the prices on the other ones is pretty good. if they don't fit into the collection i'd pay a little more to get them in your grade range since these are all common you can do better

I think all of them have had a cleaning. The 91 is the most interesting of the lot, the 81 the least.

The 83 has very desirable toning striations, but the rim damage detracts.

$35 for common-date Morgans at an LCS is nothing to complain about. In the future look carefully at the surfaces. If you suspect tampering or cleaning, pass.

Contacted dealer. I can either get a refund or exchange if I can find another coin I'd like.

Any tips on what to look for besides scratches?

Only the '81-O shows obvious eveidence of cleaning in these pics. The others - suspiciously perfect-looking.

I"ve been watching Youtube videos that discuss detecting cleaning. So I understand that light refraction can be used to both detect and disguise (e.g. some ebay sellers) cleaning.

So I thought I should point out my photography setup. I was unable to get proper artificial lighting so I now shoot in my sunroom which provides good, natural light dispersion. Shots are made using a tripod mounted camera directly over the coin. I try to get the camera lens as parallel to the coin as possible without physically measuring. The (macro) lens is about 1.5" from the coin.
