So, I'm a new member. Just signed up after reading this post after doing research on same topic. I found a 2018d Jefferson nickel when my 8 yr old daughter & I were War Nickel searching which after a girl scout project the 2 of us have enjoyed penny searching however today I couldn't find a bank that had any boxes of non-new pennies so we decided to try a box of nickels for the first time. I found something nearly identical to the original poster on this thread & like he/she noted... it's newer #1, #2 the obverse is TOTALLY 100% has a matte finish, yet the reverse is exactly normal as far as the finish. I find it hard to believe anything could just totally remove_change side exactly even. We are new to the hobby so maybe I'm completely wrong. Is there no way that this is an error of some sort? I will attempt to post photos of both sides. Thank you all in advance! Sorry if this post is too long. I just want to give as much detail as possible! (I took both photos of obverse & reverse at same angle, distance & lighting!)Brand-New-2018-D-Nickel-Shiny-On-One-Side-.

Welcome to the CFF, Rnbjnbnlb! You have to realize that many things can happen to a coin in five years.

@rnb, first welcome to CCF. Second, best practice is to start a new thread for each new coin rather than reanimating an old thread so I have split off your reply. For reference, here is a link to that old thread:

Now not knowing that the original topic was about - I'll guess here.

I think that your nickel may have sat for a while (heads up) and got tarnished or something, while the reverse was protected and did not tone out.

Spence - that link leads (at least me) to a link that I have no permission to view.
I fixed it.

Thx @jbuck--that will teach me to have coffee first and then worry about CCF.

to the CCF

We'll likely never know the reason for the surface differences but it's not considered an error so keep it as a novelty if you like it.

To CCF! Just some weird toning from environmental factors. It's not an error. PMD.
