Quote: This is probably a dumb question. Since these are all PCGS graded coins, do you have a registry set for Eisenhower dollars? Not a dumb question at all! No, I do not. Yes, it was on my mind at some point. I suppose I have been putting it off—being scared of how low it will rank.

I'd be very proud of this set no matter how low it ranked. You're probably right that it won't rank very high but there are some top notch coins in it. Even in MS-64 Ikes can be more elusive than many people realize. None of the higher grades are really common.

I might still be looking if I had not relented on those MS-64 examples, not to mention the 1972V2 at MS-63. I consider that one a steal as it was looking like I would have to settle for an AU coin.

Some BU rolls are wholesaling at $100 now days even though BU rolls often contain no nice choice examples at all. The '76 type I is only one of the toughest since only about 10% of mint set coins are nice choice attractive examples. And that's when the sets were new and hadn't all tarnished yet. Most of the sets are gone now anyway and only about half of the survivors can be restored to good condition with an acetone soak. The mintage of these was extremely low so finding BU rolls might be impossible. Most of them seem to have gotten into circulation. Some of the other Ikes may be even tougher. The '71 was set aside in rolls but there were no mint sets so the rolls were dispersed. These were almost universally poorly struck and banged up before leaving the mint. Even the "common" Ikes are tougher than most of the Morgan dollars in high grade.

I agree with the sentiments that you should be proud of this collection. That 1971-S silver $1 proof is absolutely stunning! And a mint state 1972 Type 2 is outstanding. My favorites are the bicentennial Ikes, but all the coins in this collection are top notch.

I am pretty sure that goal is unreachable now. A while back a member was creating a monster box of Ike rolls. I need to go search for that...

After reviewing the beautiful Ike's in this thread again, I noticed that Philadelphia suddenly started to mint proof Ike coins/medals around 1990. Why is that? Why not leave it to San Francisco only?

Good job, Jbuck! It's really hard to put a quality Ike dollar set together. The mint had a difficult time for the first couple of years with the dies for such a large cupronickel clad coin. It's why I really only collect the S mint silver clads. Softer metal means better strikes.
