Some of you may know that I own a 1794 dollar in an NGC XF45 holder. Yesterday I received the Heritage Dallas sale catalog that will take place mid-month. That sale's feature item up for sale is a 1794 $1 graded PCGS XF45 CAC. I immediately tried to compare the grade of the two coins, and of course, I am keenly interested in how this coin does at auction as you don't see this coin in this grade up for sale that often. I see my coin as minimally better than the Wiseman specimen, but everyone loves their own kids over others'. So I thought I would put up a side-by-side comparison ans see what you say in this forum. Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.

I definitely think yours is the better of the two. The color is much more even and the face of Liberty is without a doubt better. I am very jealous for sure.

It's not even a contest - yours is MUCH nicer, Numismatic Student! Hair, face, and denticles on obverse and eagle's feathers and wreath all have much better details. Yes, yours has a few scrapes, but it is a far finer example than the PCGS one. Perhaps you should get it re-holdered by them.

I'm mostly a lurker over in this subforum--just taking in the eye candy on most days. However, if the Wiseman coin has a bean, I can't imagine why yours wouldn't also qualify.

IMO a quick look at the wear in the hair behind the obverse portrait ear makes it obvious that your example is at least on par if not indeed better than the companion coin.

You have amazed us @NS with your world-class collection .... and I continue to remain in awe of what you have managed to assemble.

Thank you for sharing your collecting updates with us.

It would be a great honor to own either coin. For me though the PCGS 45 CAC would be a no brainer. It is more desirable with a CAC endorsement and of far greater value.

Yours wins. Now for fun, compare it with this AU50 example, also CAC.

Thanks for all of your thoughts. @kbbpll, I'm not sure if comparison to the Eric Newman is fair as it is graded higher. As such, I think the Newman coin deserves the higher grade and has less wear than my coin. For ease of comparison, I again show them side by side.

The Troy Wiseman coin sold for $264,500 in 2006. It's already bid up above that to $300,000 with 12 days to go. It will be a bellwether for the strength of the higher end of the market.

Another fun comparison is with the 1794 dollar that was in the famous Louis Eliasberg complete collection of U.S. coins. That coin was graded XF45 by PCGS. Looking at it side-by-side, it does not appear to be in a higher grade than my example IMHO.

The 1794 NGC XF 45 dollar is not in the same ballpark as the other 1794 PCGS dollars that are pictured. It is in an NGC holder for a reason. It was previously in a PCGS Genuine XF Details Altered Surfaces holder.

after looking at all the comparisons i'd say yours is a better example than the weisman and eliasberg. don't think it would edge out the newman as well as kbbpll's example as an AU50 grade. thanks for sharing those. interesting compare
