I never owned one and thought the strike on the bird was nice, but then at home taking photos, I saw all the dings.

Moth-eaten specimen, not a fan at any price.

I'll go with VF Details. In my opinion, I would have pass on this one.
Errers and Varietys.

Details-wise, you're talking about a coin that is probably in the VF range. Of course, the pitting and damage are so severe that the coin's not going to be worth anywhere near VF money. I personally think that $30 was an overpay. Just being honest, I think that a dealer would likely pay about $5 for a coin like that. Whenever I first started collecting, I often made the same mistake of overpaying for coins that were so severely damaged that they were little more than "hole fillers." Unless you're just going for a cheap type set, I would recommend that you look for one of two things in your future purchases (while remaining budget-conscious): 1. Seek out coins that are in lower grades (AG-F), but that have no damage, cleaning, corrosion, etc. 2. If you're looking for a more well-detailed coin (VF-MS), but don't want to spend the money for a problem-free example, take your time in finding a well-detailed example that has only a minor problem. For instance, there's no issue with having a lightly cleaned Half Dollar or slightly porous Large Cent. They can still be eye appealing coins that you look fondly upon. With a coin like this 1858 Flying Eagle cent, the issues are so severe that I think you'll always look at the coin and regret buying it. It just isn't an attractive example. Just my Two Cents.

some good comments by CoinEnthusiast. the coin looks like a dug coin. a typical circulated coin just doesn't look like this. I'm not sure the coin would actually receive a grade. most likely a code 98 damaged

Sometimes the education is at the price of purchases not fully thought out. Thanks for all the comments on coin purchases @coinenthusiast and all others here.

BTW, just for the record, I believe that's a small letters variety, not large letters.
