thanks bpoc1 - it was just one of those freak things.

Here is what I think happened:

I was soldering the copper pipe fitting for the cast iron tub I have. To reach the fitting I needed to be in the tub - kneeling down.
The type of torch I was using had a nozzle attached to a long hose then connects to the bottle.
Now we all should know that propane is heavier than air and will settle in the lowest area.
So I had the bottle on the bottom of the tub between my legs.
when the seal went, I heard it go and started to reach down to turn off the gas, but the gas flowed out too quickly and 'filled' the tub - when it reached the flame, all the gas pooled in the tub went up in a very fast fire ball engulfing me.
I saw the progression of the flame as it moved, I was able to clamp a hand over my nose and mouth just in time to protect my airway as I was trying to get up.
after the fireball went out - the bottle was still burning, so I had to get that outside quickly before it blew up in my face - so out the nearest door we went and into the pool it went.
That fire was out and posing no more damage, I checked on the tub area (extinguisher in hand) to ensure nothing else was still burning. then I went into the shower for 10 minutes under cold water to help remove the heat that was building up in my body, then drove myself to the VA Hospital.

After I got back home, bought a new torch and finished the job.

Sending good hopes your way, Dearborn. What an unlikely Veterans Day you had.

Absolutely, Dearborn! That's why I made it. Just a small gesture of appreciation for all that you do for the CCF. If you'd like any revisions, just let me know.
