Yes, I have noticed that he has a great many "toned" coins. I have gotten some nice coins from him and I've also sent a few back. I figure with a 30 day return policy I can inspect and post here for opinions as well. $92 for this coin was pretty cheap, so I thought worth taking a chance on. I actually paid $91.23 and my max bid was $92. The other bidder was apparently a dealer with over 8000 transactions on ebay. Another $1 would have knocked me out. I'll post new pictures for opinions when it arrives.

I did not know the seller and not familiar, just had a bad feeling about the colors -- will be looking forward to updated photos.

Tough to say about the colors. I've had successive pictures taken with an iPhone show different brightness and colors under the exact same lighting. Some sort of automatic shading/exposure in the phone I expect. It appears to me that if anything was done to this coin it was minor. The other coin I recently bought from this dealer was the 1893 IHC that I posted several weeks ago. That one is a beauty and a definite keeper. That said, a lot of his toned coins don't look right to me, but I've never bought one so I've never seen one in hand.

I wouldn't do business with mikesmountainvalue.

Did you not read the description?

Clearly he states it's been cleaned.

I think a light cleaning. If I think it looks wrong I'll return it. Just that simple. I have other coins that have been lightly cleaned, some by me. Unfortunately the term "lightly cleaned" covers a lot of territory.

I am concerned about the color mismatch between the obverse and reverse and will have to assume it's just some sort of album / coin board toning.

That was my first thought. Almost looks like two different coins or at least two different exposures.

Otherwise it looks like a great coin.

You may want to consider sending in some of the coins you purchased from the seller to PCGS for grading before you get too deep into your collection. If you are paying problem free prices, but getting cleaned, artificial toned coins, the value of your collection is going to take a hit. The example you just purchased appears to be AT and cleaned. A lot of cleaned coins are toned to hide the cleaning. If the coin graded AU details AT and cleaned, the value is about $40. If the coin grades MS details AT and cleaned, the value is about $60. Selling and/or grading can provide valuable feedback on what you are buying.

I'm with Red, soon as I saw it I knew it was Mikesmountainvalues. The reverse really gives it away. The toning that he does somehow makes it into straight graded slabs. It's irritating but it is what it is.

If it's not right in hand I'll simply send it back. I'll post photos when it arrives. It is interesting to me that the other bidder was about $1 below me with over 8000 transactions on ebay. To me that indicates that he's a dealer. Guess he liked it too. Still a beautiful coin. We'll all see.

Don't be too hasty. Wait until it's in hand. You have a strong return privilege, so there's no reason to assume the worst yet.

Please read the thread below as it will give you an idea of how skillful the seller is at his toning craft. If you want to continue to do business with the seller that is your call. The OP coin at the opening of the thread below toned in less than 30 days. He does get a lot of his colorful coins into straight graded NGC holders.

Fascinating thread, slider 23. Raises a lot of questions. For example, where do dipped coins figure in the spectrum? They're technically "cleaned" but frequently accepted by our community. Great food for thought.

My theory on this is that this coin looks very nice and is worth taking a close look at in hand. Any cleaning was done in an apparently non-destructive way - I don't see any hairlines at all. It's not one of those "blue wonder" AT coins. Not sure how he's doing it, but some of his coins end up getting slabbed as straight. Once it's in hand I can make a decision based on actual observation and I will, of course, post more pictures here. Again, this is the same dealer I bought the 1893 IHC from about a month ago - beautiful MS coin that cartwheels like crazy. With full refund privileges I'm in control of keeping or sending it back. I just don't see the downside here. That said, I appreciate the opinions and advice. I love this community!
