This one looks funky to me. I would avoid it. I do like your small letters example though! These cents had a lot of striking issues which is why the Indian cent replaced it in short order. Usually the weak strike is associated with the eagle's head and tail. I've never seen one where the body feathers are nicely struck but the legend was so weakly struck as this.

I'd be interested if it hadn't been cleaned so aggressively. Just never seen a die break like this on a FE.

Die breaks are pretty dramatic on the 1857 coins clashed with a $20 gold and 50 cents.

Besides being cleaned, there are so many features that just look off about this one. Could be a contemporary counterfeit.

What's funny is that he wants about $50 more than I paid for that SL coin. Thanks for the input.

My vote is real. This short series was plagued with weak strikes, defective planchets, worn dies and just poor looking coins. It's why the series only lasted 2 years after the infamous 1856.
Too much detail in too high of a relief to mass produce a quality product at the time.
That said, this coin has problems and I would personally avoid it.
