There are type 1 and 2 mint marks for the 1979 and 1981 proofs from San Francisco. I can't quite figure out which one this is. Theoretically, I bought a 1981-S type 1 according to the listing.

Thanks for the identification. Two questions.

1. Many of the marks I examined on PCGS seem to be much thinner. You mentioned the spine on this example. Was this punch over-hammered? i.e. is the mark supposed to be only the spine, and someone drove it into the die so deeply that we are seeing the recesses of the punch?

2. The article I read claimed there is a flat spot in the upper loop. Is that really the distinguishing factor? Or is the difference that the tail seems to have a flattened end, compared with the very rounded Type 2?

Thanks for the help. =)

This is Type 1. The easy ways to tell the difference is 1981-S Type 1 mintmark will match 1979-S Type 2 and 1980-S. For 1981-S Type 2 the top right of the mintmark gets thicker as you look towards the extreme NE point of the mintmark. This is why I call 1981-S Type 2 the Tsumani S cause the thickness quickly expands.
