David Lawrence Rare Coins - A fascinating experimental pattern issue, pairing a Postage Currency obverse with a unique SIL./NIC./COP. reverse. Rarely encountered and highly collected for its unusual composition and design. This example is the finest known at PCGS across all color designations and the finest CAC-approved, placing it at the very top of the census. The eye appeal is extraordinary, with vivid gemstone toning in tiger's eye, topaz, amethyst, and aquamarine hues, complemented by a sharp strike and softly matte surfaces. For advanced collectors, this is a top-pop pattern with elite status. For those pursuing exceptional type or patterns, it's a visually stunning and historically significant opportunity.

Auction DescriptionStruck in copper with a reeded edge and featuring the "Koulz's Alloy" design that pairs an undated Postage Currency obverse (from 1863), with the broken "S" in STATES, with a reverse that displays SIL. / NIC. / COP. in the center, followed by a straight line and the date. This pattern is the finest known at PCGS in all color designations, as well as the finest that is CAC-approved. Magnificent gemstone colors, from tiger's eye around the rims of the obverse, becoming bolder as it reaches the design, where it softens to topaz and amethyst tints with a glint of aquamarine on the legs of liberty. The reverse starts similarly, slowly gradating to opalized wood as it reaches the "I" in the center of the coin. Sharp strike with an almost matte finish.
