That is a stunning addition to this thread @era. A bit more modest is this 12th Century Denier from the French Abbey of St Martin of Tour. These are quite common and inexplicably I have purchased two of them. I'll post the one that is in slightly better condition.

Thx for the kind words. It's been quite some time since my focus was on US coins and so that has afforded me the ability to focus my collection elsewhere. I have spent quite a bit of time on medieval Europe and so you are seeing that result on this thread.

Quote: Somehow I see a chicken on both sides - on the reverse it is riding a horse - can't unsee it now I agree the bust has quite "bird-like" features (not as complimentary as "aquiline"). Maybe he just had a very prominent "beak." ... as did his successor, Ladislaus I, on this denar dated 1081-1102.

Quote: as did his successor, Ladislaus I, on this denar dated 1081-1102. So he does. Nice denar! Here is my example of the Bearn PAX coin. Initially minted for the 11th century counts, all named Centule, it became immobilized and minted for a couple of centuries. Denier, Bearn, 1080-1240, Morlaas. Billon, 1.10 g, 19 mm. Obverse: ONOR FORCAS // PAX. Reverse: CENTVLLO COME (Count Centule).

More great contributions @era and @kei! Here is a fun Denier from the French Bishopric of LePuy that I have not yet posted on CCF. It dates to somewhere in the 12th or 13th Century and what I like about it is the simplicity of design--two propeller-shaped crosses, one with four arms and one with six. Any peripheral inscriptions have been lost to the ravages of time.
