And now for something a little different--here is a Denar from 11th Century Moravia (Olmouc mint). It is more of Otto I's kingdom.

Quote: a Denar from 11th Century Moravia (Olmouc mint) Another great looking coin! Time for my "newest" denier! In 1649, France minted single denier coins for the last time. The denomination was simply becoming too small to be of any practical use. Denier tournois, France, 1649, Louis XIV, Paris. Copper, 1.65 g, 16 mm. Obverse: LOVIS XIIII. Portrait of the young king. Reverse: DENIER TOVRNOIS.

This small (11 mm) silver Denar is from 11th Century Hungary and was issued by King Salomon I.

You've really got a splendid collection of early denars from central Europe (Bohemia / Moravia / Hungary)! For comparison, here is what Poland was producing in the 11th century. Denar of Boleslaus II (1070-1076), Kopicki 25:

Thx, but I think that all of our collections are quite complimentary. Here is an 11th Century Denar from the German Bishopric of Speyer:

This Denier from the French Lordship of Bearn was minted for a couple centuries starting in the 1080s. It has a so-called PAX monogram as a central design feature.

Quote: You've really got a splendid collection of early denars from central Europe (Bohemia / Moravia / Hungary)! Quote: Denar of Boleslaus II Nice denar! Somehow I see a chicken on both sides - on the reverse it is riding a horse - can't unsee it now . . . Quote: Denier from the French Lordship of Bearn Oh, those are nice (and cool)! I've got one too, will show it tomorrow I think. For today I have something else in mind. Quote: Very cool additions Denier collectors are the coolest collectors. Bouncing back in time from my 1649 of yesterday, almost 900 years, to the late 8th century. As the first Charles to ascend the French/Frankish throne in 768, he will become known as Charles the Great, or Charlemagne. Not the prettiest of my Carolingian deniers, but still the gem of that collection. Denier, Frankish kingdom, 771-781, Charlemagne, Melle. Silver, 1.21 g, 17 mm. Obverse: CAROLVS. Reverse: MEDOLVS (Melle).
