Quote: I'm playing it today in the off chance that the wise heads here can tell which year it is with other methods. I'm always up for a challenge, and am always looking for ways to SPEND MORE TIME (but less money) ON COINS! So ... I think we can at least consider the possibility that it is 1591. Here is a 1591 with a similar gap in the date, and similar form of the infant with his legs curled up, and similar drape to Mary's dress (features within the red oval): (Added: I checked MA shops which probably has more examples of these than anywhere else, and am sorry to say that 1590 and 1592 also cannot be ruled out based on the same features. If you really want to pursue it, you could look there for an exact die match)

Thanks very much @tdziemia for your thoughts on this, and efforts to research it, while I have been blissfully sleeping through the night down under. I will take up the baton at some stage today and compare with other dies.

Great looking coins! Here is a 1587 1/4 ecu from Bearn for Henry II (who in 1589 became Henry IV of France).

Nice one @era. I've got a Pfennig from Regensberg with the date (15)87 for today. The only other text on this coin is the denomination (1/84):

Quote: The only other text on this coin is the denomination (1/84) I don't collect German city-states (except if they have a religious figure), but all those thaler fractions are pretty neat. I think 1/96 and maybe even 1/128 exist (I'm sure there's a thread ... ) 1586 Livonian trojak struck in Riga with portrait of Stefan Batory "warts and all"
