A catch up for 1331 AH731 AE Tanka Dehli Sultans Muhammad bin Tughluq introduced a forced token currency system during his reign, using brass and copper coins as substitutes for gold and silver. It was intended to be used at the same value as precious metal coins. The system ultimately failed due to widespread forgery, a lack of public trust, and disruption to trade and commerce. The date is spelled out in Kurdish (Kurmanji) around the outer margin of the obverse (LH) image. "hafsad si yek" = 731. The mint is possibly Dar al-Islam.

Beautiful coins! I missed the exact one-year mark; we are now at 366 days from the start, which means today's non-catch-up date is 1234. (Somewhat of a meaningful point inasmuch as this is the date of the oldest* known AD dated coin, a type attributed to Roskilde in Denmark that probably** commemorated the fancy year. I'm not expecting anyone on CCF to have that one, obviously!) Updated list of missing dates: 1464, 1462, 1457, 1454, 1446, 1414, 1409, 1408, 1407, 1385, 1384, 1382, 1381, 1367, (1361?,) 1356, 1350, 1349, 1347, 1346, 1344, (1343?,) (1342?,) 1341, 1340, 1339, 1337, 1336, 1331, 1330, 1328, 1309, (1307?), 1306, (1301?,) 1300, 1298, 1297, 1296, 1295, 1294, 1293, 1292, 1290, 1289, 1288, 1287, 1286, 1285, 1284, 1283, 1282, 1281, 1280, 1279, 1278, 1277, 1276, 1275, 1274, 1273, 1272, 1271, 1270, 1269, 1268, 1267, 1266, 1265, 1264, 1263, 1262, 1261, 1260, 1259, 1258, 1257, 1256, 1255, 1254, (1253?,) 1252, 1251, 1250, 1249, 1248, 1247, 1246, 1245, 1244, 1243, 1242, 1241, 1240, 1239, 1238, 1237, 1236, 1235, and (as mentioned) we should be on 1234 today. (Slowly picking off at the 14th century. Looks like the 13th would remain badly covered for a while yet, though.) *) TIL about the Amalfi tari from the brief co-reign of Frederick II and Constance I of Sicily in 1198 AD, which is said to feature both an AH date (595) and an AD date (1198). Much more common than the 1234 coin too there's apparently concerns about the date though. **) TIL that there are other explanations for the type; Niels Stigsen of Roskilde, to whom the coin is usually attributed, became chancellor of Denmark in that year, and apparently oversaw a massive reform of Danish coinage.

I was going to wait until I had played this coin in HFBCWG7, but that doesn't seem likely soon, so here is a catch up for 1342. Mamluk AE Fals AH743. The date is in letters, with the three being at K12 on the RH image.

Nice work on 14th century! That 13th century needs more attention though I don't think I have anything until the 1170s.

Excellent coin! We're slowly picking off the 1340s; the 8th edition of How Far Back is going to be interesting. 7th too, maybe.
