Earle42, the explanation you quoted can only make sense if the grease lining of the number recess becomes dislodged and retains its shape while being struck into the planchet. How it would avoid being completely flattened is unclear.

Thank for the reply Mike.
I admit confusion still.
How does this process mentioned/quoted produce a raised element on the field?

I'll throw my two (greased) cents in on an explanation.
The dislodged digit isn't flattened because the field it lands in is itself filled with grease. It is rising from a field of grease rather than one of metal. A traditional dropped filling lands in a metal field and is properly flattened.

Earle42, the grease that lines the die recess is raised toward the die and incuse where it faces the planchet. If it retains its cross-sectional shape after being dislodged, then it can produce a raised element. How it might retain its cross-sectional shape under the impact of the dies is the primary puzzle. Ordinarily, when a grease deposit is dislodged, it produces an incuse element -- a dropped filling.

CoinHi, I think you might be on to something. Gotta think on what you've proposed. If the backing of grease on the field has some give, it might allow the dislodged grease lining to retain its shape.

CoinHI, if I am given the opportunity to write up this newest find, I want to credit you with coming up with a plausible explanation as to why we end up with a raised number rather than an incuse number.

Thanks, Greg. I always forget whose given name is connected to what CoinCommunity handle. You have my e-mail address, so if you have additional photos, I'll be happy to receive them. No need to send the coin, as it's abundantly clear what we're dealing with.

Grease Mold Doubling article in Coin World by Mike Diamond. Outstanding article on the subject in Coin World by Mike Diamond. GMD was a subject I was not familiar with until I read the full article. If you have interest in GMD, or other variety and error coins, I encourage you to subscribe and get all the details. I did not have permission to share the article, therefore it is intentionally blurred. Special thanks to CoinHI for his sharp observations. NY Islander
