While I was cashing the receipt from a coin-counting machine at one of my "dump" banks today, I asked the teller if she had any loose half dollars. "Yes...I have one", she replied. As she was handing it to me I could tell that it was a 40% silver Kennedy half dollar.

If a previous customer dumped a large amount of coins in the machine and it rejected the silver half dollar (which in addition they didn't recognize), that customer may have cashed the rejected coin when they took the receipt to the teller. Does anyone on this forum definitively know if those machines reject silver coins? I have found a few US or foreign coins in the reject bin when I've used those machines -- but I've never found a silver coin.

On the Coinstar FAQ page is a list of the coins their machines reject. I would assume most public coin counting machines would use more or less the same technology, even if they aren't Coinstar brand.

Coinstar cannot accept Eisenhower silver dollars, 1943 steel pennies, pure silver, commemorative or foreign coinage. They may not be recognized by our kiosk or returned to you.

Silver coins get rejected and returned. Ike dollars get dumped into the internal trash bucket and don't get counted or returned, which is why those coins get pride of place at the top of the list.

The Magner 900 series machines at several banks near me do not reject silver coins. I have found silver in bags from the machines.

But, they also do not accept half dollars or dollar coins.

I agree, jbuck. The reason I do not search half dollars at a large scale is that there is no place to effectively dispose of them in my region. Thus I'm restricted to the occasional roll or what I can spot in a teller's tray.

That's OK with me, though, since there is plenty of silver to be found in dimes, quarters, and nickels.

Same for me, TomM... The week of 10-28 through 11-2-24, I pulled 10 silver coins: 7 War Nickels, 1 1963-D dime, 1 1954 quarter, and 1 1962 Canadian quarter!

On topic: The Coinstars here where I'm at have always rejected silver coins. I've managed to find at least 8 of them every year since 2016. Well, this year, I have found NONE! Which makes me think they may have updated the machines here to not reject them.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

I used to buy bags off my Credit Union's nice LaRue counter. Did not reject silver.
