Hi everyone, I need help with this coin that was given as change by a local supermarket. At first I thought it may have been struck on penny planchet. Almost certain it isn't struck on different planchet. What is the copper from? Being new to collecting, I have yet to learn what is, and is not of the error variety. Thank you in advance for taking the time with a short explanation of what I have.

Copper color looks like surface toning, which might come from chemical or environmental exposure. You can weight it to confirm, but I agree that it is not struck on a cent planchet.

Also remember that US nickels are composed of 75% copper and only 25% nickel.

There's a trend of new collectors putting an emphasis on color but coins can take on many colors depending on the environment they are in. A coin's color is probably the least thing to be concerned with. Weight of a coin, on the other hand, is much more important. Wright helps in determining wrong planchets and identifying fakes.

Interesting toning. Keeper if you like it or as a reference example only.
