Hi I am collecting for my children and grandchildren and my two newest great grandchildren. To that end I have acquired several "sets" of coins. Some of the sets are properly stored in capsules in their cases. But I have some of the sets that are stored in cardboard such as the millennium 1999 and 2000 Canada quarters series.

I am aware of the damage to the coin faces that can occur because of the cardboard. I am really considering taking them out of the cardboard holders and putting them into 2x2 mylar holders to better preserve them. My great grandchildren are below the ages of 5 so it will be quite a few years more that they need to be stored. I also want the kids to "see" the beauty of coins. The twelve 25 cent nickel coins of 1999 were issued along with the Millennium medallion of 1999, inserted in a replica of a 1785 map (Cardboard) of Canada. The medallion was only available in the millennium set. All coins are brilliant uncirculated.

For me at this point it isn't so much about the value, as about the preservation of the beauty.

Please can any one advise me about breaking up the set like this? I can still keep the cardboard maps.

Getting them out of the cardboard and into something better like a 2x2 seems like a good idea. Just be careful when making the transfer. Only handle coins by their edge.

Knickerssum.

I say leave them as a set. Once you remove them, the authenticity is lost. I know the set and the medallion. Still easy to obtain. I also think the kids would like the presentation. Give it sooner than later. Have fun.

Knickerssum & Bushbunnie. I would keep them in their original holders.
