PCGS - Before the steel Lincoln. Before the aluminum Lincoln. There was this. The 1885 Indian Head cent pattern using a regular die was struck in aluminum instead of copper. Just one or two examples are believed to exist. In PCGS PR65, it's valued at $27,500. Team Steel, Copper, or Aluminum?

Aluminum was a precious metal in 1885, which is why it was chosen to cap the Washington Monument the previous year. The electrolytic process developed in 1886 caused the price to plummet.

Wow....I didn't know this was tried. I wonder if die pairs would last longer using aluminum. It resists corrosion better then most metals. Thanks for sharing this coin.
