I believe that's part of the normal design.

I looked at several pennies 'near' that date presented (don't have a 2000 handy) and I don't see that little flat portion above the beard, could be MD or possible a hit.

As E&V already stated, it is the normal design. Notice the lip that sticks out and the beard on the neck, it only lasted the one year in 2000.

This design was only in 2000.
