Can't even begin to imagine the number of hours I have spent swinging a metal detector before this finally happened. If I see another in my lifetime I'll consider myself extremely lucky.

Congratulations indeed - I see some familiar USA copper and silver coins in that tray. Perhaps that central large copper is from Ireland.

But they pale by comparison to the superstar find.

I ask .. is that a gold coin? Sized at maybe a quarter eagle? Dated maybe 186something.

Fantastic indeed for a hard working and dedicated metal detector enthusiast.

I'm thrilled for you for the find. Looking forward to seeing what your amazing conservation skills can do with this one.

Ya find spots like this out in the middle of the forest via research, every once in a while it pays off. V is 1887, IHC 1896, Seated 1875 and quarter Eagle 1907. Seated and eagle right on top of each other, gather they were dropped together. Seated heavily worn, eagle close to AU.

nickelsearcher - center mass is a button. Does it look Irish to you?

Fantastic find. It sure looks like you were hiking in a beautiful area on a nice day, too. That's two good things at once!

@docc, really nice work digging up these. With regard to the button, I am far from an expert, but the linked thread below from the metal detecting forum might point you in some good directions. Any chance there is lettering on the back side?

Looks like a lovely area to be hiking & searching in.

It does at first glance. The harp or lyre resembles Irish coinage to my eye. Hopefully you can learn more about it.

Congratulations again on your gold find.

Not as much as I would have thought. Based on an inflation calculator, $2.50 in 1910 is worth $85 today. https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/in...?amount=2.50
