WOW! $2000, you should have bought one already slabbed. Personally, I would try to get a refund. Unless you're an expert, I never recommend buying a raw key date Lincoln. There are too many fakes, cleaned and altered coins out there.

The pictures are not near good enough to confirm authenticity. That said, generally it seems correct. The color is suspect, I think PCGS would give it "questionable color". They don't have a great tolerance for toned coins.

sorry to say but the MM position does not match any of the 4 known obv dies. the 'S' is way to low compared to the bottom of the 9's. even though the MM does not appear to be added some fakes are pretty darn good. I'm 90% its counterfeit on top of that the color is not right

@panzaldi, I have to disagree. I think the rotation of the coin makes it harder to assess the mintmark position. Here's a comparison with a genuine S-VDB position #4, and it appears to be an exact match. In fact, I did an overlay, and the mintmark position is spot on. Of course, having a sharper photo to confirm the die chip in the S would be helpful.

thanks Zurie, your photo of the side by side does lean to obv die #4. i'll adjust my brain cells today to reflect that.

I am sorry to say that I actually had a convo with the seller on ebay of this coin.and they were so shady there is absolutely no way this is a genuine S VDB. I almost suspect the OP is the seller trolling, and if I'm wrong, I really encourage you to reach out to ebay and get your money back.

i go back to my original post that the MM position was not correct. should have gone with my original thoughts on it. the 'S' is tilted to the right too much, too low with the second 9 and not in line with the left side of the '0'

And I'll stand by my original opinion that it's genuine. As I said, I did an overlay of the date and mintmark, and it's an exact match with mintmark position #4. Obviously, there are other problems with this coin, and the seller being shady certainly doesn't help.

alright then, if it was mine, I would definitely slab it so if XWV sends it in we can resolve it. if not, then we agree to disagree on this one, which is not too often. a more focused photo of the VDB would also help.

Boy, after reading all the comments I feel very concerned about my coin.
I have submitted it to PCGS and expect input from them next week. (6/22 - 6/26)
Fear not I will tune you all in to the results.
The ebay seller seemed well rated but time will tell.

Well my coin dealer got a call from PCGS regarding my 1909-S VDB..
It was slabbed and graded "UNC details questionable color."
You're a pretty sharp group with some dead on observations.
I'm a bit dissapointed but it is a valid coin and the color is questioned but not ruled out as authentic.
The best to you all.

My communications with the ebay seller for my
1909-S VDB
New message to: degree (3,448RED_STAR Star)
FYI - this penny was sent to PCGS & just came back ...
"UNC. AU Questionable color".
Just to give you some feedback an individual that knows you and the coin in question told me I got ripped off so don't expect PCGS to grade the coin without "Details".
It came back and he was right!

Sounds good Bob, it's a very pleasant coin. It'll be shipped either today or tomorrow at the latest . - Josh
xvw:

Based on your input and ebay rating I'll make the purchase.
I do appreciate your time and patience.

Hey Bob, the wheat lines are definitely fully distinct. This is a fully struck coin which is why I believe its a genuine RB+ piece. The reverse is much more beaming and pleasant to look at in hand than in pictures. Nope, no major nicks or scratches which is really nice for this piece. - Josh
xvw:

Are the wheat lines distinct? Are there any signs of surface contamination/major nicks/scratches, etc. ?
degree

Hey Bob, do you have any specific questions on the reverse? It's a pretty blazing and nice looking reverse, my helper with pictures is out for the month, so on its own I dont think I can get better pictures than what's already listed. - Josh
xvw:

Yes I have watched the video. It is difficult to study the detail of the coin while it is moving. The still picture of the reverse is not clear so I'm left wondering the condition. Were it not for the fact that I'm considering dropping $19XX for the coin I would take a chance.
A clear picture of the reverse will enable me to make the purchase or not.
Thanks for your consideration. I await your response.

Hey there! There is a video within the listing that shows the reverse, let me know if you have any questions on it - Josh
xvw:

Do you have a better photo of this coins Reverse. I'm tempted to buy it but I would like to see a clearer photo.
Thank you!

Congrats - would be great to see the clear images from PCGS. Can you provide the Cert# so we can post it here for completeness?

well congrats on the UNC. not so congrats on the color. the only thing I can thing of as to why I thought the MM was slanted right was that the camera angle may have not been straight on. even looking at Zuries side-by-photos it appears to be a little slanted. one reason I suggest when taking photos to set the coin on a flat surface. place something like books on either side of it that the camera or phone can be laid across set a timer and let it take the shot .
