The 5th pic leads me to believe it was encased.

No errors, just PMD. Might have been encased at one time. It's still a keeper though, since it's silver, so don't spend it.

Are you guys sure it was encased rather than someone silver soldered four jump rings (such as to use in jewelry) and then most of those jump rings were broken off? I ask because especially at 2 o'clock on the obv, that extra material on the rim seems to have part of the ring remaining. In the end it certainly is damage rather than a mint error, regardless of the cause.

I always believed that encased does not necessarily mean in a full ring, but set into any sort of holder. I suppose it may be the incorrect term and what you describe is more accurate.
