Alright. I guess this is a new thing for me. I looked on ebay and took a chance. I found this 1981 Type 2 proof for 57 dollars with shipping. It's a PF65. It isn't the best looking coin, but for 57 dollars, I think I'll take it. I just wish it was a little bit higher of a grade, but a lot of the ones I looked at were close to 80 dollars and no returns. This seller offers returns, which is a must IMO when spending this much money. Any thoughts? Did I make a worthwhile purchase?

Many of my Cu-Ni clad proof Ikes in the Dansco album have this haze (the silver clad proof Ikes have the other kind of haze). But they are what they are. I did not really bother me 32 years ago when I finished the album and by the time it did, the sentimental value was too strong. It is is one reason why I built a second set in PCGS holders. All of those Ikes are problem free.

Hmm. Interesting! What exactly causes this? Should I find another coin? I suppose it doesn't really bother me too much, and I'm happy with the price.
I suppose that's probably why maybe it's PF65 and only 50 dollars before shipping?

The haze may be caused from improper handling at the Mint (not properly rinsing the blanks, etc), improper storage by the owner (high humidity, dirty air, etc.), or a combination of the two.
It usually does not affect the grade, but they eye appeal will affect the price.
If you are cracking it out for the album, give it an acetone rinse. Nothing to lose but time and some acetone.

Just want to add this Humanist1287. Buy the best you can afford, don't just jump on a coin, shop until you're happy... I'm lecturing, but don't follow.. I've made some impulse coin purchases that I now regret. A recent one is the ICG 1981-S MS66+ I posted a few days ago. It's a decent-looking coin, but something about it just bothers me—maybe it's the holder. I'll probably go out and look for another one soon..

Buying really expensive coins unfortunately isn't really in the cards for me. This is what I can afford within reason. I am working on a Lincoln Cent and I'm not looking forward to purchasing the 31-S, 09 S, and 14-D due to pricing, with nearly a hundred dollars for each. The 14-D being even more. Now, what I may do, with the possibility of the 1981 type 2 proof out of the way, spend a little more on the other coins. I see tons of deals on the regular business strike and even non variety proofs in something like PF69 for only 15-20 dollars. That I can do.

I try to only purchase coins within a budget mindset honestly, at least any expensive key date coins.
As much as I would love to buy some really expensive, really high grade examples of coins, it's just not feasible for me financially.
