Almost Bought A $1 Gold Princess Coin

livingwater Pillar of the Community United States 2243 Posts	Posted 08/09/2025 12:33 pm Several weeks ago my LCS had a grand opening of their expanded store. He's mostly a bullion dealer but added a new section of collectible coins. There was a $1 gold princess coin with some wear, light scratches, no price with it, don't recall the year. A new employee of several months took it out of the display, said he'd sell it to me for $175. I thought it was a good deal, they are having special sales with the grand opening. I gave him a $175 check, he gave me the coin and receipt. Just then another employee walked by, looked at me and said "Sorry that's too cheap for that coin, it's worth $325. It's a done deal but could you please give back the coin and I'll give you your check back?" I thought for a few seconds, didn't want to look bad, so gave her the coin, I tore up the check and left. This is the same store where a few years ago I bought a 1/10 oz gold eagle, got home and they had given me a 1/4 oz. I took it back, they thanked me. I think their employees need better training LOL. My LCS once had a battleship $2 note priced at $125, I told the guy it's a $600 note, could I have purchased it for $125, sure but I have a good relationship with the LCS and I don't get ripped off so I wouldn't want to rip him off. On the other hand, the "shop" should have also done something for you to recognize you as a solid customer. My LCS is great but lately the only thing I've bought there are nuggets. He's the only dealer who sells them for less than spot. I used to buy raw gold coins from him because he had uncommon dates, but lately it has all been very common. The high price of gold does not cause people to dump their good stuff, just their polished and worn commons. "Two minutes ago I would have sold my chances for a tired dime."
