Something is off about this Morgan. It looks counterfeit to me.

This was in a friend of mines grandfather's collection. The rest seem normal.

It might just be caked with grime. Hard to tell how much is staining, or corrosion, or just dirt. Might be a candidate for some gentle conservation, starting with a distilled water soak for a few days. I don't see anything obvious that indicates a fake.

I was suspicious at first glance as many counterfeit Morgans are "toned" in a similar fashion. That being said, I believe that this coin is genuine. The date position and mintmark look similar to known VAMs, but the main reason is this little fellow:  This is a known pickup for VAM-1 (and possibly others as well) and in my experience it'd be very unlikely for a counterfeit to have a detail like this.  I'd still do a Ping Test to be sure, but I'm on Team Genuine. Please let us know how you make out, good luck. |

I don't think the value would really justify either. There aren't any notable 1883-S VAMs to my knowledge and the coin appears to be in the VF/XF range, meaning it's probably only worth around $100 (or less). If you're looking to sell it you'd be better off selling it raw in my opinion, it's unlikely you'd recoup your grading/conservation fees on top of the raw value.

I'm not seeing anything that would indicate a counterfeit. VF details ( PMD) most likely improperly stored |

One more vote for a genuine coin, with probable ED and very poor eye appeal. A better date for sure, but with little premium value in this condition.
Add it to your silver stack!
