Quote: However, what is still very cool is that is still is the highest graded brown Lincoln Cent in either proof or business strike known. There are only three Lincoln cents graded 69 Brown.. the other two are type 4, and are not really beautifully toned.
I'm going to play devil's advocate. According to the PCGS price guide, a PF69RD is worth $30. All else being equal, red cents are worth more than brown cents. Therefore, I don't think this coin is worth more simply because there are fewer brown than red 1969-S proofs. That said, calling this cent brown is really misleading. Brown is almost aways caused by people handing the coins. In this case, it's toning on a proof cent that's incredibly beautiful. I don't know how much it's worth, but my guess is well north of $30.
The value is driven by a couple of different things. First, as you mention the beautiful toning. Second the stand alone population for that year in brown, as well as the stand alone population in "brown" across the entire Lincoln Cent series.but most of all the value comes from the fact that now it exists and there is the potential for a "finer registry" set for those who collect toned Lincolns, brown proofs, or brown proof and business strike etc.
The value is driven by rarity of this grade/color designation. I agree there is nothing special about a 1969-S proof. but when you start going down the rabbit hole of registry's and toned cents, it's very rare. I've actually had more than a dozen four figure offers already.
Multiple four figure offers are great, but I think you'll have to auction it to see what it's really worth. You may be able to get significantly more. I personally think that the value is 98% because of the toning, but I get that there are people who have to fill that hole in their set.
