Hello Everyone! I hope you're having an enjoyable evening... I just picked-up this 1928-S Peace dollar; I saw the bar under the upper lip, and I assume that it's mint-made. I looked at about 75 other high-grade examples on the H APR page, and saw a couple of strikes that looked repaired at that area of the lip. What would you call it for a VAM search?

Looks like a die chip to me. Maybe look for other noticeable anomalies for the year and mint and nail it down. There are full coin pics for many of the VAMs.

Oldgrouchyguy, I was looking at the wrong thing, I think. Is the area I have circled what you are talking about? If so, I would say it is a clash remnant. It does not line up that well with anything but would say it was a rotated die clash. You can see die polishing in and around the area too that would support this.

-makecents-: Thank You for the link! I'll see if I can match it up; that is a high plane surface of the die... it's not in VAM though, that's odd but there are only 13 listed varieties

There are a couple of VAM's with doubled upper lips and nose, yours may have been polished more or less than the examples. The pics are very limited on this series though. One thing did catch my eye though. Pull of the full coin reverse shot of VAM-13 and look at the polishing around the eagle, the silhouette looks extremely similar to yours. The images are scans; it really does pick-up the polishing around the eagle. That line looks like a short, blunted ray poking out under her lip, but that might require "die acrobatics". I'm surprised that, so far, I can't find another; still a few hundred to go through though. I'm probably going to break it out and remove that carbon feather, and maybe the original skin. That would make the coin *pop* and clean-up around whatever -it-is for better viewing

You sound like you know what you're doing...I would do the same thing...just a "quick" dip and rinse on an MS coin doesn't have to remove the skin and make it dull.
If you decide to do it...repost your results.
If done correctly...I could see this 28-S coming back at least 62 and 63 wouldn't surprise me.

smat45: I took all the toning off of this one; QDB wasn't kidding on the PCGS page for the date/mm as some having "Booming Luster". You wouldn't recognize it now. Currently being regraded, will share

Repaired lower upper Upper Lip on this 1928-S graded MS65 by PCGS and sold last year by Heritage. Looks like the Mint employee dragged a nail across the span
