Carrigna, found this paragraph in the International Banknote Society Journal #4, 1985.

{The genuine AMG banknotes for France had been bitterly opposed by General Charles DeGaulle. He considered them usurpation of French Sovereignty by the Allies and he had the French Provisional Government in Algiers declare that the currency was worthless because "traditionally the right of issuing currency has belonged to the national authority in France alone." It is possible that DeGaulle's complaint led to the German attack on the AMG notes.}

I would imagine that at the time of the Allied invasion French francs would have become, at best, undervalued, and possibly even considered worthless. France required a working currency that the local populace could trust and AMG would have served that purpose as the war literally moved forward.

The article is about German parody notes which included two parody issues of the French AMG notes by the German Propaganda Office.

Dearborn. I think they are called Gaiters, not leggings.

Thanks for the correction - but my reference was to General Patton demanding them and what the Army called them during WWII.

Quote:
It is widely understood that the U.S. Army formally referred to the items as 'leggings'. General George S. Patton, a strict disciplinarian, used this official terminology, and an old New York Times article even references an incident where he ordered an officer to don them using that specific term.

The terms "gaiters" and "leggings" are often used interchangeably in common parlance, but the official U.S. military term for the M1938 canvas and lace-up lower leg coverings used during World War II was "leggings".
