Here's the promised follow-up on the proposed Charlie Kirk commemorative Silver Dollar. Hopefully, the hyperbolic "hot takes" posted to the original announcement for this coin will not be repeated here.

Bill(s)

- HR 5580 (Introduced September 26, 2025; Abraham Hamadeh (R-AZ))

Short Title

- Charlie Kirk Commemorative Coin Act

Proposed Year of Issue

- 2026

Purpose

To commemorate the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk.

Findings

(1) Charles "Charlie" James Kirk was an American political and cultural activist who inspired a generation of young Americans to value and practice the core freedoms enshrined under the First Amendment, namely freedom of speech and freedom of expression.

(2) Born on October 14, 1993, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Kirk rose to prominence as a notable public figure, author, and champion of the open exchange of ideas.

(3) Founding Turning Point USA in 2012, Kirk grew the organization into a nationwide grassroots organization focused on involving young people in the political process.

(4) Today, there are over 3,500 Turning Point USA chapters at schools and universities across the United States, engaging a new generation of Americans in the country's civic life.

(5) Since Kirk's tragic death on September 10, 2025, Turning Point USA has received over 62,000 requests from students to start new chapters or expand existing ones.

(6) Charlie Kirk was a passionate defender of the First Amendment, honoring the tradition of the Nation's Founding Fathers and imparting upon Americans of all generations the importance of regularly practicing and safeguarding the crucial freedoms the United States was founded upon.

(7) Through campus tours and widely attended events, Kirk championed the idea of open debate and respectful disagreement, turning college university campuses into public town squares at a time in the Nation's history when freedom of speech was imperiled.

(8) Charlie Kirk and his wife Erika Kirk inspired countless young Americans to value the institution of the family through their activism and the example they set themselves.

(9) A loving father, Charlie raised his daughter and son alongside Erika, recognizing and sharing the importance of forming a family.

(10) A stalwart believer in American exceptionalism, Charlie loved his country and had great faith in its potential, encouraging his fellow citizens to honor their civic duty and participate fully in upholding their responsibilities as citizens.

Coins

- Up to 400,000 Silver Dollars

Surcharges

Not applicable (NA)

Sponsor/Beneficiary

None listed.

Comments

The bill was referred to the House Committee on Financial Services, but has not yet been acted upon.

All of the bill's co-sponsors are Republicans, but the bill does not have widespread bipartisan support in Congress; the lack of such support will sink the effort.

As I mentioned previously, I think this bill is an emotionally-driven response to Kirk's assassination; I believe it to have a low chance of being approved - though if it somehow makes it to President Trump's desk approval seems likely.

It seems very unusual for such a coin's Issue Price not to include a surcharge, and for no Sponsor/Beneficiary to be named. The bill does not even include language that net proceeds would be used to help reduce the national debt. Because of this, to me, the bill seems incomplete as written and would likely be amended at some point.

The coin's proposal is destined to elicit strong reactions from all sides. To some extent, this is nothing new/unique. Back in 1963/1964, there were those who did not favor placing an image of John Fitzgerald Kennedy("JFK") on the Half Dollar and/or believed the measure to do so was being rushed through Congress. Granted, this camp was a small minority, but my point is that 100% agreement is a diffiu=cult goal to achieve.

Likelihood of Passage?

The House bill currently has 25 co-sponsors.

- Per GovTrack: TBD% (not available as of date of this post)

Personally, while I like the idea of his commemoration in coin form, it becomes a question of timing. Emotion almost certainly will be it's ruin from the start. I believe it would stand a much better chance in the near future once things settle as the movement it generated grows. So I do see one forth coming.

Perhaps there are already too many commemorative coin ideas floating around? I have the feeling we are living in 1920-1940 redux.

Yes, Charlie was born in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois (Arlington Heights); he was living in Utah at the time of his assassination.

I see He Started Turning Point in Arizona, ..

My understanding is that Turning Point USA was founded in Chicago, but has its current headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona.

From the Press Release from Representative Hamadeh that was sent out to coincide with the introduction of his bill, it appears he was a strong supporter of Kirk:

"I said it before and I will say it again; Charlie Kirk was an American treasure, so it only makes sense to create a treasured commemorative coin in his honor,"

"My hope is that when this coin is passed down through generations of patriots, Charlie's story is retold. A story of a young man who displayed courageous faith in his Creator, a willingness to engage in open debate without rancor or invective, and unwavering dedication to his family, friends, and the greatest country on Earth."

With the Turning Point USA HQ in Arizona, it's understandable that the State's representatives in Congress would move forward with a commemorative coin bill. It would also have made sense if the effort was initiated by those in Illinois or Utah.

If they must, give him a medal. A commemorative coin—any commemorative coin—would be absurd, divisive, and inappropriate while the political climate is this volatile.

Consider this: they could not even get a Reagan commemorative coin issued when they tried just over a decade back. "It is too soon!" Can anyone say, with a straight face, that Kirk accomplished more for America than Ronald Wilson Reagan? A Kirk commemorative coin before a Reagan commemorative coin? Are you kidding me?

I am sorry it that sounds hyperbolic, but it has been on my mind since the beginning and I felt it finally had to be said.

Thank You Commems,

I can understand the elected officials comments , In my opinion America Needs More Patriots to be Heard.

The America I was raised in seemed to have Many to Admire, Many to Aspire To, by feats of Strength, Unparalleled brilliance , Unwavering Courage etc.

I believe Charlie Kirk was on a Mission, Helping educate to bring Togetherness, Respectful Peaceful Dialogs with Today's Youth on college campuses.

In my opinion, We need More Passionate and Determined Every day People like the Days gone Bye to Have our Youth Engaged, Have them willingly involved in the Direction America is heading, He was a Powerful, Determined man on a Mission.

This is some good info.
At first I did'nt like Charlie, "he is picking on the younguns". But after more consideration, he made them think for themselves. I really appreciate that.
I keep thinking there will be a Federal Holiday in observation like we have with Juneteenth.

We do need more patriots like him to take the reins. I would if I had the know how.

Ah come'on, there is no American flag emoji?
