Quote: @CollegeBarbers I always find it interesting the way these desert nations have so many boats as part of their banknote designs. Nice add! I guess it shows how much they value water! By contrast, I feel like we take it for granted in the U.S. Great radar note and commemorative! I'm glad that Canada commemorated QEII as the longest-reigning monarch with a banknote. It still surprises me that the UK did not issue a commemorative banknote honoring her passing. I feel like that was a real failure on their part, and I'm not even a subject of the realm!

Starting off 2014 with a Netherlands Antilles 10 Gulden P-28g. The obverse has a lovely hummingbird with very interesting surface overlays that give the note a unique sheen or reflectiveness. The reverse is somewhat less impressive, showing the seal of Bank van de Nederlandse Antillen.

Quote: It still surprises me that the UK did not issue a commemorative banknote honoring her passing. England was one of the later nations to install their queen in the design of their banknotes so it did not surprise me (several countries had her image featured right after her 1952 coronation, Canada introduced her in 1954 & England in 1960). They're very conservative & don't release commemoratives (as far as I can tell). You may see some of the Northern Irish & small Scottish banks do that but not the Jolly ol' country! Speaking of the monarchy, here's her portrait once again in their last paper £10, first issued in 2010 (this version in 2014 according to Numista): P-389e: Their polymer series was introduced in 2017. The paper-to-plastic was not my favourite transition but I really liked this P-54 Commemorative $50 polymer note from Trinidad: The design seems kind of busy to me today but at the time I remember thinking it was pretty impressive (especially the dancer who seemed to blend in with the background). It was one of my first "new" note purchases (I rarely bought recently issued notes when I started collecting World over 10 years ago). The colours just "pop" when viewing it in person (as they say) but the scan doesn't do it justice. That's my 2nd note to feature a hummingbird! I am sure it is much more impressive to view in person (as many of these are).

Ah, that makes sense. Still disappointing to me, because if there was ever a time to buck the trend and release a commemorative banknote, it would be to honor the country's longest-reigning monarch. Two beautiful banknotes, walk2dwater! That Trinidad & Tobago note is especially stunning, although I agree that it is rather busy. I like the birds though! You're right, the scan doesn't do it justice, especially regarding the sheen. I'll add another 2014 banknote, this one from another island nation. It's a very colorful ND (2014) Samoa 5 Tala P-35b. The obverse shows a serene, sandy beach. Definitely a place I'd like to visit! According to Numista, the reverse depicts the "Villa Vailima" residence (now a museum) of world renowned Scottish author, Robert Louis Stevenson.

My final banknote of 2014 is a Ukraine 1 Hryvnia P-116Ac. The obverse depicts Volodymyr the Great, Grand Duke of Kyiv (980-1015). The reverse shows Volodymyr's citadel in Kyiv. It's a great example of how low value, inexpensive banknotes can still exhibit great designs that reflect a nation's history and culture.

Moving back another year, I'll start with a ND (2013) The Gambia 10 Dalasis P-26c. The obverse features a portrait of a boy and an African sacred ibis. The reverse shows the headquarters building of the Central Bank of The Gambia.

Nice notes you have posted @CollegeBarbers! One of my favourite 2013 notes is this last dark brown version from Bahamas $5.00 P-72A: The obverse features Sir Cecil Wallace-Withfiled & the reverse has Junkanoo dancers at left plus the coat of arms of the Bahamas at bottom centre. The next note is this 2013 10 Rupee cutting error I picked up from India P-102l. I got this note b/c I don't have many cutting errors & I really like the serial number (5000): On front, it features Mahatma Gandhi at right & on the back "Rhinoceros and elephant heads behind tiger at left center" (according to Numista). Also, I didn't realize (until now) that the denomination is written in 15 languages on the left panel! Cool eh!

Two more fantastic banknotes, walk2dwater! The dancing scene on the Bahamas note is beautiful, and the error and serial number on the India note is very cool and unique! My second contribution for 2013 is an Ukraine 2 Hryvni P-117d. The obverse features another Grand Duke of Kyiv, Yaroslav the Wise (1019-1054). He was buried in the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kyiv, which is depicted on the reverse.

-Thanks @CollegeBarbers. Your additional note from Ukraine also has a very attractive, historical design. Thanks for the feedback @jbuck & scopru Here's a 2012 commemorative $100 from Jamaica which marks 50 years of independence. The reverse of P-90 was typically seen on the backs of their $2.00 notes (which were coins back in 1995 when I worked there). I like the image of a mixed group of school kids (from several ethnic backgrounds) & the slogan "Out of many, one people." I bought a set of four different versions of the $100 last year before going on to complete a set of Central Banknotes (1970 notes up to $100). And here's a fun polymer $5.00 replacement from Fiji: It is P-115r and I like the kulawai bird on the front & the crested iguana it features on the back.

Great additions, walk2dwater! I especially like the Fiji note! It has a very attractive and colorful design. 2012 is a gap year for me, at least for now, so I'll be sitting this one out.
