Collecting campgates is one of the more popular themes for Roman coin collectors. These coins cover more than one hundred and fifty years; with most of the rulers represented. There is a debate about what is actually portrayed on the reverse. Are they military campgates or city gates. The most prolific reverse type is the PROVIDENTIAE AVGG; which translates as " [In honor of] The Foresight of the Emperors." This might just merely be a slogan praising all the Emperors for the security of the Empire; so more of an abstract thought, rather than a specific type of construction. These campgates should not be confused with coins from Roman provinces; which certainly issued coins with city gates. However, the argument for campgate is strengthened by the reverse type issued by Valentinian III. This reverse was CAST VIC and castrum is a Roman camp/fort.

Here are some of my favorites.

Campgates started in silver and there are a few reverses with VIRTVS MILITVM being the most common.

That is a serious case of campgate deficiency.

Your coin is Constantine II (you can tell because the obverse has IVN NOB C-- which is Junior Noble Caesar) any attempts to clean that coin will only result in lost detail

Wow, Some really nice coins there Victor. As I said in another thread I sold most of my coins off to start again, so I also only have the one Campgate at the moment, found in Nottingham a few weeks ago. The condition is pretty good for a detecting find, they usually come up a bit grotty unless they come up in small lots or hoard coins.

I have a few metal detecting finds; but my favorites were found accidentally. The Appleford Hoard was discovered in 1954 while a farmer was ploughing his field and it contained 5,752 coins, most from the Constantinian period.

Here is my only campgate, Constantine I, Cyzicus, poor condition. I paid $4 for it. I stopped buying ancient coins about ten years ago and switched to modern coins/bullion. I still have my ancient coins at the bank box, don't plan to sell them.

Cyzicus campgates also come with the "eyes to Heavens" bust

"How deeply his soul was impressed by the power of divine faith may be understood from the circumstance that he directed his likeness to be stamped on the golden coin of the empire with eyes uplifted as in the posture of prayer to God: and this money became current throughout the Roman world." Eusebius (IV.15)

I have a rough example and regret selling the nicer examples that I had.

Constantine I

CONSTAN-TINVS AVG; diademed head, looking up to Heavens.
