This was a fun one to research, didn't notice the RPD until it came home. Is there an online reference for (braided hair, at least) large cents, or a good book/guide someone could recommend? I've very little experience with large cents but was able to find this one using PCGS photos in their phone app (not a scanning-thing, just the photograde for phones). I think it's a match  Odd little lamination, I believe, in the obverse field as well. Thanks for looking!   |

Odd little lamination, I believe, in the obverse field as well Not sure if that would be a lamination error as Large Cents were 100% copper - not an alloy metal. That's why those "splotchy" streaks on the coin are most likely from an older cleaning and the surfaces are re-toning. |

Marv65, I thought I'd seen Large Cent NGC slabs or the like with "Lamination" on them, although very much more drastic. I could be mistaken! I wasn't sure whether that look was from cleaning or composition either, much appreciated. Silly that I'd forgotten they're entirely copper  Thankfully, this was a cheap interesting coin, and it was very informative  |

Nice Braided Hair Large Cent! I'm not sure of a good online reference for Braided Hair Large Cents varieties. Errers and Varietys.

Dearborn, Errers, thank you both! I'll have to find a book one of these days... Dearborn, of course, I included one at an angle for some better depth-perception as well. If not a lamination, perhaps a die gouge?   |

Reading more; I think it may be copper slag/impurity in the planchet, similar to but different from an alloy lamination issue, having a different cause.

I'm still not convinced myself. Indeed; plausible is where I'm at! I can't find a good comparison. Certainly don't think it's a value-added error, perhaps even a detraction, but interesting  |
