Well, that makes sense! I also got these in the mail today as well; 1870 Shield nickelPretty nice coin IMO Also received this 1873 Shield nickel today, "closed 3" variety. Pretty worn, but yeah.. These are NOT cheap. Also, thanks to nickelsearcher, I got this wonderful book for future Shield and Liberty nickel purchases! Thank you, my friend!

Thank you I'm excited to say I ordered the key date coin of the series; the 1885. This is the most expensive coin purchase I've ever made, coming in at around 250 dollars. Higher grades, obviously, are much more expensive. Looking at the prices at Red Book, VG-8 comes in at around 600+ dollars. I opted for it slabbed and it is graded "AG 3." I feel somewhat relieved due to the fact that it is now out of the way. It's not the prettiest looking coin, but given the prices in grades above this, this is what I could afford! The 1886 and 1912-S should be a piece of cake after this! I believe they can be had for anywhere between 80-150 dollars. I am opting for the coins slabbed though, to discourage fakes. Obverse Reverse Here is another one I was looking at, that was the same price and same grade essentially. However, several people I talked to said they liked the "circulated cameo" effect better in the first coin, so, I went with that.

I like the patina of the one you got better. Nice to get the spendy one out of the way

Thanks, Seamonkey Yeah, now I don't have to worry about it! This is probably the most expensive coin I'll ever purchase. And for me, rightly so, since the Liberty nickel series is so short. I can easily (well, not easily..) purchase the other two key dates over time. I'm still gonna opt for graded/slabbed coins, though. I might not even put any of them in the album. Not sure yet. I don't like empty holes... But I think there would also be something to said for having all three of the keys for the series nicely slabbed and retained in their holders. If I don't want to have empty spots, I could even throw some "dateless" coins in there to fill the holes. I'll worry about it when it comes down to it!

Thank you, guys. On a sad note.. I may have to return this coin. My wife said I might be sleeping outside if I don't lol I'd prefer to sleep in my warm, cozy bed In her defense, it probably wasn't the best time for purchase right now, but I will definitely look into it in the future. On the plus side.... I am supposed to be getting my 1868 Shield nickel that I ordered from ebay OVER a month ago. Sheesh. I don't understand why this happens with ebay so frequently. Stuff just gets lost.
