$67. #10 of 40 acquired recently. Recently I purchased 40 slabbed Morgan dollars (36 ANACS, 3 PCGS and 1 ICG) and will post one a day alongside one Peace dollar. I paid an average of $67 for the 40 coins. This time I will post the grade of the coin 2 days after and this time we can compare our grades with those of TPGs. Thoughts? Thanks! There is a chance you may have another really good VAM here. I can't see the two things that define this VAM, but I see what look like the markers for it. 1897 VAM-8 is a Hot 50 Morgan, with doubled left stars 1-3 and a doubled cap top. I can't see those clearly. The date position looks right, and I do see die cracks from the "E" of ONE to the "D" of DOLLAR and along the tops of UNITED and STATES that look very close to some of the markers for this variety. EDIT: The cracks along UNITED and STATES appear on a couple 1897 dies in different forms, but as far as I know, the angled crack from "E" to "D" on ONE DOLLAR is only on this die pair. For the grade, this one is a lot less baggy and comfortably makes MS-63. The obverse looks like it would hold it back from MS-64. If this proves to be VAM-8, you did very well here. That's a popular VAM, and not particularly easy to find.

I also think this is a 63 but ANACS thinks it is a 61. Love the crooked 7 in the date.

The good thing is that I would much rather own an undergraded coin than an overgraded one.

Yeah, they were a bit tough on this one.

That's really nice luster for an 1897, too. Maybe your coins will help put to rest the myth that ANACS is "soft on grading." With the new photo, this looks solid as an MS-63. Good find at a 61 price, for sure.
