Here's my second coin purchase. I think I'm hooked now. Wondering how she'll grade. My camera is dead so I'm using the auction pics. Naturally it looks better in person. More luster and the nicks are very unobtrusive. Thanks Kevin   Edited by KyKev

I'm going to say VF-25, because of the wear on the cheek and above the eye.

VF calls for Liberty to be sharp. However, something is going on with the T in Liberty and therefore I'll give it VF-20.

I'm going to concur VF, but 5 points higher than echizento, just to disagree.  I also worry about the scratches near the denticles above the cap; I wonder if that would cause a no-grade by a TPG. The good news is, this one certainly looks to be O-109, an R.4 rarity and among the scarcest Overton varieties for this year. KyKev, if you could confirm what seems to be a spike coming off the seventh star near the cap (the star count begins at the bottom left star, at 8:00, and continues clockwise around the obverse so Star 13 is the one at bottom right), the attribution can be considered firm. The spike extends up and right from the point towards the denticles. Edit: Bill069, you posted while I was typing. RTY is known to be weak with this variety, and shouldn't be a factor in grading the coin. |

SuperDave, I'm new at this and usually just go by the book on grading. Thanks for up-dating me on the variety and the fact that the variety is noted for a weal strike. I learn a little more each day! Thanks again.

WOW. That's awesome Dave. Here's a crop of the star. Is this the "spike"? The pic is a little fuzzy, but it is very clear under my 16x loupe. Let me now if you need other pics.  |

Sure looks spiky to me KyKen , very nice coin , still like your other one better cos of the weird 2 , was the spike variety thing not pointed out in the sale of the coin ?
I looked at quite a few other 1936 bust halfs this afternoon , I dont see the spike on any of those,its pretty clear on yours.

I bought it as a generic 1836. Coinzip and Heritage list it as R3, so I won't be able to retire on this one.  |
