I wanted to upgrade my type example of the "with arrows, no rays, no motto" half dollar (issued 1854 and 1855 only). The one I had was maybe a Good-4. So, I picked up this one which is clearly better than Good. How do you all grade it?

Better than good. I'd say EF45. Might have a shot at 50 but I don't see much luster in the pics so EF seems more than likely the grade. It looks like it was well struck on both sides with honest, original surfaces. Nice pick up!

I'm no pro, but just reading the book I would call it F-12 and it may go to F-15.

In my opinion, that's a blemish on LIBERTY so it's all there. I am going to call this coin VF30

I'm going to say overall VF-25, IBE in Liberty are weak.

I was thinking VF-35; though liberty is a bit worn, most of the detail is more typical of EF coins. It looks like liberty wore more than most of the design. Too much wear on lower reverse for EF though IMO. Alright, that's my final answer (after 3 edits : D)

Okay Jaobler: We have grades ranging from F12 to EF45.
What do YOU grade your coin?

Has anybody taken VF-20, yet?
I guess not, so I'll take it. I think the wear on LIBERTY, shield, and shoulder clasp on the obverse; and eagle's leg feathers and talons, as well as the arrows on the reverse, are all consistent with VF.
Nice 150+ year old half!

I think it's a conservative VF-25, a pretty solid VF-30, and a long-shot VF-35. Here's a PCGS VF-25 for comparison; PCGS may have been generous with this Carson City coin. The 1855-O looks significantly stronger and should make VF-30 IMO. The coin value doesn't justify a slab so I'll probably just call it "very fine". Thanks for all the feedback!
