Sorry to hear that

I believe disability or SSDI pays the same as Full Retirement Age: SSDI payments are calculated as if you reached full retirement age when you became disabled, making the amounts equal.

I know someone who used to work at SSA.

Something to call them about considering your disability.

For extra work consider substitute teaching if you live in a city or area with many schools. The key is to take jobs such as test proctoring or upper level high schools classes. Usually you are paid the day simply to monitor students as they take an exam or complete online classwork. Also the high-rated academic and arts high schools will usually have kids without too much behavioural or home problems (of course this is NOT a guarantee but even if they do the kids have stronger support systems than a school that is underfunded in an area with many people struggling financially) and subbing won't be hard and rather enjoyable. I have been doing it for several years but taking on a harder group special ed kids as well as some from general education but again it is a nice gig and you control completely you schedule with there being a minimum number of days of work to meet (it is very low in NYC, 20 days). In addition you may need to do a few easy online trainings to do. Plus you could introduce some kids to coin collecting - the K- 6 kids especially love seeing a Kennedy halves, older dime and nickel designs, large dollars and the golden dollars as they rarely see these in everyday commerce. Also if you have foreign paper currency kids like seeing that too. Just realize that their attention span for it will not be long but they will appreciate it and you may get one or two students really interested in numismatics.

Hi, Dearborn ... I'm very sorry to hear of this. I know how hard this can seem, but I agree that you may have other opportunities, as have been suggested here.

... Give me a shout if you want any budget-friendly recipes...my wife & I both cook 99% of our meals ...

Best, John (mrwiskers)

Well after a lot of sole searching, I decided to file for SSDI and collect that - the bummer thing is that I won't be allowed to work for a minimum for one year - after that I have no idea what I'll do.

I guess in the meantime, I'll be working on my house (when I can afford it.)

Just saw this. Sorry to hear about your department and job. Seems like you made a good decision about SSDI. At least now you have a year to decide whether you want to do something different before finally retiring. I know you'll land on your feet.

After working for the same printing company for 25 years, the whole plant closed, with 10 days' notice, back in 2014.
About 100 employees instantly looking for a job.
I was 60 years old at the time. Getting another job with the same skills would mean relocating, easier said than done.
I exited my previous career in radio back in 1992. By then, the industry had sapped ALL enjoyment from the notoriously low-paying job, and by 2014, it had changed so much that I would be viewed as an old, OJT trainee, so that was out, too.

It really stinks to have the rug pulled unexpectedly out from under you when you're an old fart.
Sorry to hear about this, Dearborn. Hope you regain your footing better than I have.

Yeah, I took 2 weeks off in December - after 4 days I wished I had long hair to pullout (I can grow it long but choose to trim it to ¼ inch or less.
I got used to having a job - one I had ever since I was 18 - now I'll have nobody to tell me what I need to do - HEY!! wait a minute!! that might be a good thing!
Thanks Smat!

thanks Zurie

Yeah, I was hoping that I was the one to pull that rug. I'm a heck of a lot better off than the others in my department - they didn't plan for something like this (I did thankfully) and they are all much younger than me, so for them the job search is a must. I at least have choices.
I have over 13 grand in my checking account, over 16 K in my savings account, and 50K in a CD that will mature in 12 months, on top of that, I have my VE Disability pension of 4.1K (tax free) every month for the rest of my life
AND my Mother (God bless her) is sending me another 10K to have (for emergencies)
I also have Free Medical (for EVERYTHING) and free medication for life too.
Which makes me wonder if I need to sign up for Medicaid in 2 years or not

So for now, I'm good, and good with my decision to file for SSDI (which will be the amount that I would have gotten if I went to full retirement in 5 years.)

Good to hear!
I love your Mom...mine would do the same for me
You'll just have to be a little more concentrated on coins you need then coins you want...
It might even narrow down to what you "really" want to collect?

SSDI may take months for approval. Does your state allow you to claim Unemployment Benefits while you're waiting? That's something you may want to consider.

Yes it will, but with my 100% VA rating, I get expedited filing and my take only 5 months vs years...
and I'll be taking UI but that is only $360 a week and only lasts 24 weeks It is just a hold over I guess until a job is found (for job seekers, that is)
