Hungary Thaler 1698, Real Or Fake? Edit: Pictures Added

This weighs 26.3 grams and has a diameter of 45-46 mm (slightly oval) It is supposed to be a Thaler dated 1698 from Hungary, and appears to be K214.8. (https://en.numista.com/33903) According to the numista listing, it should weigh 28.3 grams. Also, the surfaces are porous, and the spacing of the letters of the legend is not quite the same as in the numista listing. The edges seem to have been smoothed and there may have been a mount, but there is no apparent casting seam. On the other hand, it does test as silver, and the coin itself has that slightly rounded feel that you get with roller dies. I am wondering if this is fake, and if not, why these anomalies? publius Pillar of the Community United States 807 Posts	Posted 01/29/2026 6:45 pm Images would help, but "porous surfaces" and underweight sound like a potential cast copy to me. Two grams underweight would be a very visibly undersized flan, or very distinct clipping. EDIT : the letter X in "Rex" on the obverse is deformed in a way I cannot account for, and the crown on the reverse is totally different from the image on the Numista page, being more similar to the one in this reverse linked in the comments there : http://www.elfreeman2.com/mg14/14mg020r.jpg Edited by publius 01/29/2026 7:37 pm Report this Post to the Staff

This type was minted in large quantity (91 hits on acsearch for 1698 Leopold thaler 3264). This weight is not unheard of. I did find one at 26.5 gr: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3736995 But something like 95% are above 28 gr. But the irregularities in the font (I could not find that wonky X in REX anywhere else), punctuation (normally very clear dots, diamonds or saltires) etc. lead me to have doubts.
