Here's a coin that acknowledges the loss of the Karluk sailing ship during the Canadian Arctice Expedition in January 1914.

The reverse of 1969 Italian 500 lire, depicting Christopher Columbus's ships, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria.
The Santa Maria ran aground and sank off the coast of Haiti on Christmas Eve, 1492, with its timbers used to build the La Navidad fort. The Niņa was later used in other voyages before disappearing in 1500-1501, while the Pinta faded from historical records after returning from the first voyage.

Following up on triggersmob's post...

The reverse of the 1892-93 World's Columbian Exposition Half Dollar depicts Christopher Columbus' flagship, the Santa Maria.

As noted, the Santa Maria was shipwrecked in 1492 on a reef off the coast of what today is Haiti. The ship was not seaworthy after running aground, and Columbus had to return to Europe aboard the {i]Nina[/i].

Wood from the ship was salvaged and used to build a Spanish settlement (La Navidad - so named because the shipwreck occurred on December 24th).

2011 U.S. quarter depicting U.S.S. Cairo.
The U.S.S. Cairo, a Union ironclad gunboat, was sunk by a Confederate mine (torpedo) in the Yazoo River on December 12, 1862, becoming the first warship to be destroyed by an electrically detonated mine. Raised from the riverbed in 1964, the vessel is now preserved and displayed at Vicksburg National Military Park.
