habiru001 Valued Member United States 236 Posts	Posted 04/17/2006 12:20 am Yes Renal, the 49'ers were the ones who went rushing to California gold fields in 1849 but 1850 was the key year- This Grizzly Bear is part of California history also. Before the 49'ers there was a revolt in California whish was called the Bear Flag revolt. What you said is why I like commemoratives- they tell a story of their state or area-and of course as you know- commemorating certain events. I think all countries have minted Commemorative coins. I just saw one issued by Greenland- but minted for that government by the US MINT. Report this Post to the Staff

I just mentioned the Bear flag revolt that happened just before the Great Gold Rush in 1846-- Therefore, I should leave a link for anyone interested in this bear. (I didn't do it--) It has been in my Dansco Album for well over 30 years. I have often wondered myself just how some of these coins get such interesting tones. I am almost inclined to believe that (Nickel) like on the Buffalo nickels produces some of the most stunning tones.- I had one several years ago that had an unbelievable green-gold-bluish tones- and A fellow at the Merced, Cal show saw it in my album and offered me $65.00 for it-No Joke! Well, this was a long time ago-maybe 20+years, and guess what- I took him up on it- But have yet to see another tone like that one.
