I have aquired an 1885 O in perfect shape, some redish toning on the Obv. My ? is this coin has otol of accessive metal around the coin, more like on the Rev edge pretty much all the way around the coin. Looks like when the coin was struck, it was not a clean strike, nor was it cut properly to be more smooth around the edges... Any idea what VAM this would be? Would like to know Value of this rarity! Thanks

ucadam, I deleted your email address as we encourage responses to be made on the forum and, by posting your email address publicly, you run the risk of non-members getting it and using it for spam. I also moved your post to the main coin forum and made your title a little more specific, you'll get more help that way. Photos can be posted right here, there is a tutorial located here. It's not that hard. I'm sure there will be a Morgan expert here shortly.

im not a morgan specialist or do I know much about VAMS but we do have a few people on the board that does. It might be a little more helpful if you can get us a picture though. That way they can look at it and beable to get a grip on what ya mean.

Morgan experts lurk here. So do people like me, who pretend to know something. ucadam, from the sound of your description, scans would look as good as pictures. Shoot for an image of the coin about 500-600 pixels wide - that'll be big enough to see detail. If you need help or image processing, my email's in my profile.

Interesting post - a Morgan with either excess metal or a ragged edge is super interesting. Can't wait to see this one.

I am a morgan collector also and would love to see a picture of this coin, I have quite a few VAM's in my collection and dont have anything like what I am picturing your coin to look like. it is impossible to tell you the VAM# without a picture zeroing in on the areas in question or atleast a picture showing the whole coin that also shows the specific areas. I would love to see these pictures when you have time to upload them. Oh yeah! welcome to the forum, as you can see there are alot of morgan collectors here and most have more experience than I do and all are alot of help with any morgan question you may have. but pictures are better than a thousand words especially when it comes to coins because its nearly impossible to grade/identify a coin by a description

Like many others, I'm a Morganphile, but won't even try to guess what it is until I see an image. Excess metal on a Morgan? Never heard of it, at least as described; there's no VAM 1885-O listed with excess metal. Might even be a couterfeit. However, no doubt about it: you have my attention. Fred
