I read one definition that said Type 2 has clear mintmarks / Type 1 may or may not have clear mintmarks. Can anyont help explain? Thanks, Clogdance Report this Post to the Staff

walker New Member United States 13 Posts	Posted 04/17/2006 10:04 pm Hi, Clogdance, & welcome from a "new guy". My trusty "Striking Impressions" book refers to Type I & Type II mintmarks on 1979 & 1981 proof coinage, specifically the "S". The Type I was produced with a worn punch, resulting in a "barely recognizable blob". The Type II resulted when a new punch was introduced, resulting in a much more defined mintmark. Basically, the processes repeated itself in 1981. Hope that helps. Report this Post to the Staff

On the type 1 the s is just a mess, on the type 2 it is a clear "S" and looks alot better Report this Post to the Staff
