What is the diference between Type 1 and Type 2 coins?
I read one definition that said Type 2 has clear mintmarks / Type 1 may or may not have clear mintmarks. Can anyont help explain?
Thanks, Clogdance

Hi, Clogdance, & welcome from a "new guy". My trusty "Striking Impressions" book refers to Type I & Type II mintmarks on 1979 & 1981 proof coinage, specifically the "S". The Type I was produced with a worn punch, resulting in a "barely recognizable blob". The Type II resulted when a new punch was introduced, resulting in a much more defined mintmark. Basically, the processes repeated itself in 1981. Hope that helps.

that is definately correct, I have a few of each, type 1 and type 2 Susan B Anthony dollar coins and thats exactly what the differences are. On the type 1 the s is just a mess, on the type 2 it is a clear "S" and looks alot better
